Avrupa Birliği

Overview

The Marmara University Institute of European Studies offers a Master's degree in European Union Law as a specialization. This institute has a rich history, clear objectives, and a vision and mission that align with the needs of Turkey's integration process with the European Union (EU). It also boasts a number of achievements and offers a variety of programs.

History

Turkey was one of the first countries to apply for membership to the European Economic Community (EEC) in 1959, marking the beginning of its integration process with Europe. In 1963, Turkey began the process of establishing a partnership with the EEC by signing the Ankara Agreement. This process continued until Turkey applied for full membership to the EU in 1987 under the leadership of then Prime Minister Turgut Özal and Minister of State Ali Bozer.

Following this application, the European Community Institute was established within Marmara University to train the necessary personnel for the EU membership process and conduct scientific research on EU-related topics. The institute began its activities with the support of Prof. Dr. Haluk Kabaalioğlu, the founding director, and Prof. Dr. Orhan Oğuz, the founding rector of Marmara University. To date, more than 50 foreign faculty members have taught at the institute.

Objectives, Vision, and Mission

The main objectives of the institute include training experts in EU matters by offering master's and doctoral education for the public and private sectors, directing research in areas needed by the Turkish industry and business world, and thus providing maximum benefit. The institute offers thesis-based master's and doctoral programs in EU Law, Economics, and Politics. These programs are offered to students in two language options: Turkish and English.

The mission of the institute is to train experts in EU matters and provide maximum benefit by directing research in areas needed by the business world. To this end, it organizes academic events such as seminars, panels, and conferences on various aspects and policies of the EU and offers publications on the EU. The vision of the institute is to be the most competent academic institution in Turkey and have a say in all kinds of projects and activities carried out in this field.

Achievements

The institute has four main branches of science: EU Law, EU Politics and International Relations, EU Economics and Business, and Political Communication in Europe. In 2006, the institute was awarded the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence title by the European Commission. The EU Documentation Centre within the institute continued its activities until 2011, and the EU Information Centre, which started operating in September 2012, continued its activities until 2016.

In addition, the Turkey-Germany Relations Application and Research Center, which has been operating within the Institute of European Studies since 2009, is a first in this field in Turkey. Since its establishment, more than 50 foreign faculty members have given lectures and seminars at the institute. These faculty members include famous names such as Prof. Dr. Dominik Lasok, considered one of the founders of European Law, Emile Noël, former Honorary Secretary-General of the European Communities Commission and former Rector of the Florence European University Institute, and Dr. Guy Vanhaeverbeke, former Press Spokesman of the European Parliament. The institute also closely cooperates with TEPSA (Trans European Policy Studies Association) based in Brussels.

My personal thoughts on the EU Law Master's Program

In this department, where you can continue education and training under two separate programs in both Turkish and English, you will have the opportunity to specialize in EU Law during the EU membership process by seeing the European Union in depth with courses such as EU Institutions, EU Judiciary, EU Free Movement, EU Constitution, EU Competition Law, EU Trademark and Patent Law from very competent and valuable professors in their field. In this context, it would be appropriate to say that a very different program awaits you in terms of the notion and vision of Law compared to other law master's programs. A program full of both theoretical and EU legislation compliance awaits you. I am sure that you will gain significant gains in this program, which is not less than the EU Law education you can receive in EU member countries in terms of education quality.

Considering that the need for EU experts will gradually increase in the EU membership process of our country, both in terms of legislation compliance and the implementation of regulations, I foresee that the importance of people with qualified education in this field will increase even more. For this reason, I strongly recommend this program, which I think will contribute in terms of rich education content and career, to you valuable candidates.

I am sharing the program requirements and calendar published by the Marmara University Institute of European Studies with you in the attachment. I will present the text of the user as an infographic.
